Butterflies and Blisters - The road to cancer recovery

It’s a long walk, this road to recovery.

Certain it would lead me back home,

I started out with the best of intentions,

And that it was a journey I could make on my own.

But it’s a long walk, this road to recovery.

The path is not straight from pain to healing.

Certain my defenses would protect my soul

I started out with my shield and my sword,

Thinking all it would take was a little control.

But the path is not straight from pain to healing.

It feels more like a mountain or being lost at sea

When the darkness descends and there’s nowhere to flee

You can’t catch your breath and fall to your knee

Under the weight of your grief, you just want to be free…

It’s in those dark lonely moments when you honour your pain,

Put down your burdens and lift your face to the rain.

When you finally acknowledge your scars and your fears,

That’s when recovery begins, with those first healing tears.

This is just the start of the journey.

So put down your sword, it’s no longer a fight.

The ground beneath your feet is a well-trodden path.

Take a deep breath and fill your soul with the light.

This is just the start of the journey.

It’s a long walk, this road to recovery.

But I found joy on this path of butterflies and blisters

Once I finally figured out that there’s no going back.

And I’m so glad I found you, my beautiful sisters.

Because whilst it’s a long walk, this road to recovery…

… We do not have to travel it alone.
